About Lower Lake South

Location Highlights

Lower Lake South is nestled between several prominent bays on Lake Minnetonka, just south of the iconic Big Island and bordered by the cities of Deephaven, Greenwood, and Orono. This picturesque area is known for its serene waters and stunning lakeside real estate. Ferguson Point and Swift Point, located along the shoreline, are among the most sought-after residential spots for their scenic beauty and peaceful ambiance. Big Island Nature Park, a 56-acre island near the lake's center, offers a fascinating glimpse into history, once home to the Big Island Amusement Park from 1906 to 1911. After the amusement park's closure, the land was repurposed as a veterans' retreat, providing a relaxing getaway for military families for eight decades. Today, Big Island is a protected park that draws visitors for its natural beauty, wildlife, and opportunities for boating and hiking.

Water Quality

The waters of Lower Lake South are pristine, with depths ranging from 6 to 70 feet. According to the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, the water quality consistently receives an A rating. The crystal-clear water makes it ideal for a variety of recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, and watersports, throughout the year.

Boating Restrictions

Lower Lake South enjoys unrestricted boating access, allowing visitors to explore freely. Whether it’s a leisurely cruise or high-speed water activities, the lake welcomes boaters to enjoy its open waters.

Amenities

Lower Lake South’s prime location gives boaters easy access to both natural and urban experiences. For a vibrant downtown atmosphere, boaters can dock near Excelsior, a charming lakeside town just minutes away. Excelsior is known for its summer events like Concerts in the Commons, the Farmer’s Market, and the spectacular Fourth of July fireworks. In addition, visitors can shop at trendy local boutiques such as Primp and Big Island Swim & Surf Company or dine at beloved spots like Lago Tacos and Coalition. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the natural beauty of Big Island offers a more laid-back experience. Boaters can anchor on the island’s sandy shores to enjoy a picnic or swim while taking in the scenic views. Big Island also remains a hotspot for social gatherings, hosting some of Lake Minnetonka’s biggest summer boat parties.
