Nestled between Crystal Bay and Stubbs Bay on the sprawling Lake Minnetonka, Maxwell Bay offers a prime location in the city of Orono, part of the Orono School District. This scenic bay boasts over 3.5 miles of shoreline and spans across 978 acres of water. Known as a popular destination for recreational water sports such as water skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing, Maxwell Bay is a local favorite for both adrenaline-seekers and leisure boaters.
Maxwell Bay reaches a maximum depth of 43 feet, offering deep, clear waters for much of the year. The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District rates the bay with a B for water quality. While the water is generally good for swimming and other activities, algae blooms can sometimes develop in late summer, which may affect water clarity and swimming conditions.
There are no boating restrictions on Maxwell Bay, making it an ideal location for boating enthusiasts. From fishing boats to speed boats, all are welcome to explore the expansive waters.
For convenient lake access, visitors can use the Maxwell Bay Boat Launch, which is managed by the city of Orono and located just 5 minutes from downtown Spring Park. Additionally, North Shore Marina is situated nearby, offering a variety of marine services such as off-season storage, fuel discounts, seasonal maintenance, and boat slip rentals.
The shoreline around Maxwell Bay is predominantly residential, but visitors can also explore the beautiful Norenberg Memorial Gardens at the bay’s channel entrance. Spanning 73 acres, these formal gardens are a popular venue for weddings and special events, known for their picturesque settings and lush greenery. Fishing is another major attraction, with the bay being home to species like Walleye, Northern Pike, Crappie, Perch, and various types of Bass. Early mornings are recommended for the best fishing experience, as the bay tends to get busy with boat traffic throughout the day.
